My Therapeutic Approach
This guide serves as a compass to help give you an idea of what to expect. However, the application of these principles varies significantly depending on each unique client and their specific circumstances.
The general order of things
1. Show up as you are. I cultivate a safe and confidential space to talk about anything you need to divulge. I will hold space for your emotions, stories, and experiences. We will go at a pace that feels right for you.
2. I consider how your presenting issues are impacting your nervous system and vice versa. Together, we will work to regulate your nervous system using various techniques so that you are able to adequately self-regulate and feel grounded. Healing can only happen when we feel grounded in our body and our immediate environment. We will also start to go deeper into the sticky parts of your life (such as avoidance, relationship issues, habits, lethargy, sleep issues, etc.).
3. When the time is right, and if relevant, we can start your trauma-processing work. I take a psychosomatic approach, meaning we will be paying attention to your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. I often bring in some inner child work, internal family systems, and existential theory as well. Overtime, you will notice your relationships improve, your trauma response weakening, and otherwise dauting tasks becoming a little easier.
4. Alongside trauma processing, we will continue to set goals, problem solve, find meaning, set boundaries, and generally support you in navigating the pain, grief, and identity shift that healing can bring.
5. Patience, self-compassion, trust in the discomfort.
Therapy, just like anything worthwhile, takes patience and, often, hard work. Results can sometimes feel immediate, and other times they may take more time. It often depends on the complexities of the issues being presented and whether or not you have been to therapy before. There is no right or wrong. No right way to heal. Not sure about all of this? Not knowing is a great place to start.
