Summer Blues? You're not alone.

The summer season often brings to mind images of carefree days, sunny skies, and relaxation. Expectations are high! Which can make it all the more disappointing and confusing if you're simply just not feeling great. For some individuals, the summer months can trigger or exacerbate certain mental health challenges. If this resonates with you, I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you're not alone. There are ways to take proactive steps to care for your mental well-being during this time.


1. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):

While typically associated with the winter months, Seasonal Affective Disorder can also occur during the summer. Known as "summer depression," it manifests as feelings of low mood, fatigue, loss of appetite, and disrupted sleep patterns. To alleviate symptoms of SAD during the summer, consider the following:


a. Seek shade and cool environments: Excessive heat can contribute to feelings of lethargy and irritability. Spend time in air-conditioned spaces or seek out shaded areas when outdoors to help regulate your body temperature and boost your mood.

b. Establish a routine: Maintain a consistent daily routine to provide structure and stability. Ensure you have a balanced sleep schedule, engage in regular exercise, and allocate time for enjoyable activities.

c. Connect with others: Stay socially connected with loved ones and engage in activities that bring you joy. Organize outings, join clubs, or participate in community events to foster a sense of belonging and support.


2. Body Image and Self-Esteem:

The arrival of summer often places a spotlight on body image concerns, leading to increased stress and decreased self-esteem. To nurture a positive body image and promote self-acceptance, consider the following tips:


a. Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and challenge negative self-talk. Focus on your unique qualities and achievements rather than fixating on perceived flaws. Surround yourself with people who you feel loved by, as this can rub off on how much we show love to ourselves.

b. Engage in mindful movement: Instead of solely focusing on exercise for appearance-related goals, expand your focus to always include activities that bring you joy and make you feel good. Some examples could include activities like playing spike ball with your friends, going for a swim on a hot day, hiking a new or beloved trail, biking, walking, or paddle boarding. Activities of this nature can help promote a positive relationship with your body by helping you appreciate your body for its functionality and the joy it brings you while engaging in activities you love.

c. Limit exposure to triggering content: Be mindful of the media you consume, as constant exposure to unrealistic beauty standards can negatively impact self-esteem. Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate and surround yourself with uplifting and body-positive content.


3. Anxiety and Stress:

While summer can be a time of relaxation, it can also bring about increased pressure to make the most of the season. The fear of missing out and the pressure to have a perfect summer can contribute to anxiety and stress. Here's how you can manage these challenges:


a. Set realistic expectations: Remember that it's okay to have downtime and not participate in every event or activity. Prioritize self-care and give yourself permission to take breaks when needed.

b. Practice relaxation techniques: Incorporate relaxation techniques into your daily routine. Deep breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, or engaging in hobbies such as painting or playing music can help reduce anxiety and promote overall well-being.

c. Seek support: If anxiety or stress becomes overwhelming, consider reaching out to a mental health professional for guidance and support. Therapists can provide coping strategies tailored to your specific needs.


By understanding the common mental health problems that can arise during the summer and implementing self-care strategies, you can navigate this season with improved well-being and a greater sense of enjoyment. Remember to prioritize your mental health, engage in activities that bring you joy, and seek support when needed. Take charge of your summer, embrace self-care, and make it a season of growth and rejuvenation.
